What is plantar fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the plantar fascia which is a piece of strong tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot. Its job is to connect the heel bone to the toes, creating the arch of the foot!
Where is the plantar fascia?
The plantar fascia is the thickened tissue on the sole of your foot. It pads the foot as well as having elastic properties to help transmit the forces of the calf muscle, allowing you to spring. It provides shape to your foot arch, providing shock absorption and an even distribution of your weight as you put weight through your leg.
What are the symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis?
- Painful on first steps in the morning
- Painful after prolonged standing and walking
- Painful after intense activity
- Swelling in the heel
- Hotness and aching in the foot arch
What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?
- Poor footwear (lack of support)
- Being overweight
- Pregnancy
- Spending a lot of time on your feet
- Being flat footed or having high arches
- Playing sports and doing activities that put stress on the heel bone, such as dancing or running
- Being flat-footed or having high arches
Diagnosis & Treatment of Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is often diagnosed by case history, physical examination and an ultrasound imaging (not compulsory).
Your osteopath will then recommend a treatment plan which may include hands on manual therapy, dry needling, shockwave therapy and progressive loading exercises.
